Welcome to my blog!  Hi, I am Dr. Jayshri Chasmawala, a family practice and integrative holistic medicine physician in East Dallas. I believe my mission in life is to empower people, including myself, to live a healthy lifestyle in mind, body, spirit. I also want to have plenty of time and energy for the things that are important to me: faith, family, friends, community, and fun.

I am very passionate about empowering people because poor health is a major crisis affecting our nation. We don’t really have healthcare, we have sickcare.  We wait until we are sick before we seek care.  As a result, we are not very healthy!

In the past, I used to suffer from really bad seasonal allergies.   They were debilitating and kept me from attending spring semesters in college. I always ended up with bronchitis by the end of spring.  As a matter of fact I had a fever of 1040  when I took the MCAT, the medical school admission test.  I went to an allergist and was tested with the skin prick test- NOT FUN!!! I reacted so strongly to the testing doses that they had to dilute the testing dose.  And still the only relief, my allergist could offer me was a prescription for a long-acting antihistamine that I was already taking for years with no effect.  So I researched what else I could do for allergies. This was my first lesson that our nutrition and lifestyle can have a direct impact on our health.

I was raised vegetarian and, as a result of my research to treat my own allergies, I became vegan 17 years ago.  I do not suffer from allergies now.

The good news is greater than 80% of our chronic conditions are preventable.  This means that we are in control of our health and the quality of our life.

I hope to lead by example to demonstrate the different aspects I incorporate into my own life to live a radiant, healthful, and joyful life filled with love.  I also aim to educate people on the importance of healthy living through talks, webinars, and links to articles through education.
My blog is a part of the education I offer.  I consider there are 5 pillars of good health: 1) proper nutrition 2) regular exercise 3) adequate water intake 4) restful, refreshing sleep 5) spirituality.  Practicing these 5 pillars is what helps us prevent 80% of the chronic diseases we currently face and just help us feel better with more energy and vitality in life.  My emphasis is on the things we can and must do, and not on the things we shouldn’t do.  I believe our minds adjust better to change when we talk about adding good habits rather than subtracting bad habits. Of course bad habits, like smoking, also need to be addressed but my focus is on the positive habits we can develop to improve our health.

In my blog posts, I delve into how these 5 pillars affect our health and simple steps we can take to implement change to a healthy lifestyle.  I choose one topic and demonstrate how these pillars can affect that condition.  I use the zodiac sun sign to determine the topic because the current energy vibration sets the tone on what we naturally focus.
There are times that I have been a healthy vegan, and I also know how unhealthy I can be on a vegan diet.  My emphasis is on the healthy lifestyle tenets themselves and not so much on a dietary lifestyle.  I also am writing this blog to keep myself accountable and motivated to make sure I am also empowering myself to live a healthy lifestyle in mind, body, spirit!

For your information:
What is DO? A DO, or a doctor of osteopathy, like an MD, is a fully licensed physician with the unlimited practice of medicine.  We both go through 4 years of medical school followed by residency training in any specialty. The distinguishing quality of a DO is the emphasis that a person’s lifestyle has a tremendous impact on their patient’s health.  Although many DO’s choose to specialize, a majority of osteopathic physicians practice in primary care areas. As a DO, I help my patients preserve or restore their health and sense of well-being, often without using unnecessary medications.  Read more at http://www.osteopathic.org/osteopathic-health/about-dos/what-is-a-do
